I Saw the 12 Apostles- not clickbait
This might be a little long but you're going to want to read this!! I officially made it to Salt lake!! First thing, I no longer have Facebook on my phone so everybody better send me life updates every once in awhile. And if you're a missionary or missionary mom add me to their email list to stay in touch! (Meredith.jones@missionary.org) I can also no longer use Facebook messenger so I promise I'm not ignoring you I just can only email for the next 17 months.
That's right 17 months... I've officially been a missionary for a month ahhh. It's been the most rewarding month ever. Never in my life did I think I could wake up at 6:30 or study for hours every day without complaints but here I am, it's a miracle fr.Ok for the part you have been waiting for. On Thursday we had our first transfer meeting and as we were walking through the underground tunnels to get to lunch we saw the 12 apostles walking into the Joseph Smith Memorial Building for their weekly meeting on the 8th floor. I was so shocked that President Eyring waved at me and I couldn't even wave back because I literally froze. I turned to my companion thinking that this was normal and she was just as shocked as I was to see all 12 of them at once. I figured that I would meet a couple of them throughout the next year and a half but that fact I saw all 12 on my first official day was insane. We also were behind the rest of the group because we had to go to the bathroom and it was definitely a little Heavenly Father hug.I thought my tuesday night devotional story was going to be cool but after that last experience I dont think I can top it. We got to our general authority devotional and they announced that Matthew S. Holland was speaking, we were all a little disappointed because there was a lot of security so we thought it was going to be an apostle. He stands up and goes, "I have good news and bad news, the bad news is that this original assignment had Jeffrey R Hollands name on it and he got sick over the weekend." At this point we were all SUPER disappointed because there's nothing Elder Holland is more passionate about than missionaries. His son then proceeds to say, "the good news is that for the first time in 30 years my dad wrote down his talk before he became ill and I am going to give it for him today." Think about how crazy that is, Elder Holland has been speaking at the MTC for 30 years and this was the first time he decided to write down his thoughts beforehand. Honestly the biggest tender mercy that made suffering through 3 weeks of mtc food worth it.My companion is Sister MacKillop, she's from Dallas and has lots of Texas pride. This is her first time training someone so we're both learning together but she is doing amazing! This email is already long and we have 12 weeks together so I'll talk more about her at a later time haha.
My favorite chapter in the Book of Mormon right now is Alma 26. You guys should all read it and let me know your insights. It talks a lot about missionary work but we are all missionaries even without the tag so it applies to every single one of you."Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever."Alma 26:12If you want to talk I recommend emailing me first so I can actually respond to your questions because I can only respond to non family members once each p day.Since I no longer have facebook you can join my shared photo album for more pictures: https://photos.app.goo.gl/gMQcSXmRqWsZ31n89
Additional notes from Meredith this week:
The sweetest lady payed for out groceries today which was such a tender mercy. She told us that she prayed to Heavenly Father that she could help somebody today and so when we were checking out in front of her she said that was her sign to pay for us. We got to talk to her about eternal families because her husband recently passed away and next thing we knew we were all getting teary eyed in the Walmart checkout line haha.
On Saturday we got to explore to Joseph Smith building and went in the old restaurants and it was so cool. Us and the apostles are some of the only people that have access to the building which is so cool. The underground tunnels are so confusing I feel like I need a map haha. Also got to see where the 12 park. Sadly the church provides them all with Toyotas so none of them drive sick cars haha.
